Multiple times the Bible tells us that God is out strength and refuge, and will help us when we ask. If you haven't read James, or 1 Timothy, I strongly encourage you to because they discuss how to ask things from God with an open heart fully relying on him. "Ask and you shall receive" is a verse that is to be trusted. Asking with wrong intentions, though, or only thinking about yourself, won't do you any good.
"Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in Him, and He will do it." -Psalm 37:5
There are different aspects in our lives that are necessary for us to remember God first. One of those things is money. Money is something we need to have on this earth, and something that can help your dreams grow or help you spread the goals and gifts you have. However, money is also the root of all evil if not tended to properly. (See below)
"6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."
God has created and given everything in this earth, and will take it away, so why are we trying to control any of it? If you want to start a business, or go to college, or just have a good savings, amazing! But how can you do that while glorifying the One who gave that to you?
The context of this passage is that Paul is writing Timothy giving him instructions about living with faith and to be careful about false prophets and false teachings. Then he gives him instructions about worship, and about how to live. If you read the whole 6 chapters, you can stick yourself in the person of Timothy and see how the world is definitely not relying on God as it should be. Paul is showing Timothy how to live while teaching the truth, and how to fully and wholly rely on God. The letter concludes with the money situation which is talking not only about money, but about the ministry and the world. Paul tells Timothy that God will provide for you in all things, especially when you strive for the faithful, the righteous, the good, the justice, the love. Many people start ministries or businesses or anything to get money, but that isn't right. Yes, we all struggle and sometimes fail, but you have to know to "fight the good fight of faith."
Pray to God that your heart be in the right place; that's step one. Pray that He fills you with the passion for His glory and kingdom, and how you can use your treasures and gifts and talents to benefit His kingdom. Don't look for money, don't look for a job, don't look for answers alone. Look for how you can multiply what you currently have and ask God to help you multiply. I bet anything that you will see such a difference in your faith life, and in what you're searching for if you rely on Him.
